The town of Greenbelt, Maryland is known for being a town that was planned by the federal government during the Great Depression and its display of sculptures and reliefs by Lenore Thomas Straus, a woman sculptor who managed to make a name for herself in the male dominated field. It's also known for having the Firefly Sanctuary, a unique place for fireflies that's the only one of its kind in the state of Maryland.
The Firefly Sanctuary provides a protected home for fireflies, who are free to put on their own light show that is a much quieter alternative to the fireworks that are usually shot throughout the summer on the Fourth of July, at various baseball games, and other events.
